Ballina Baskets
I have been a student of the art of Basket making for 25 years learning from many different Masters in the craft. Exploring the infinite combinations
of materials, colors, patterns, shapes and techniques provides endless creative inspiration. Designing unique baskets for use in everyday life that
also add an element of beauty to a home is a pleasure.
I first began weaving purely functional baskets each having a “purpose” with different natural materials such as reed, willow and ash.
Weaving these materials into three-dimensional, functional forms is very satisfying. The weaving process itself is also quite rhythmic and soothing.
I weave in a “studio” in my home where I also teach students twice a week. Their enthusiasm is delightful and they continually inspire me to consider
new possibilities.
Developing more graphic and decorative pieces is a new direction. Many baskets are now one-of-a-kind. When beginning a basket, I may have
one intention, but as the materials, colors and shape develop, it becomes something quite unique and unexpected. This ancient craft continues to capture
my curiosity as these surprises evolve.
